These categories create an opportunity for a wide range of projects and people contributing to the regeneration and enhancement of Joburg’s inner city built environment.
<< Back to Halala Joburg Awards home page LIVING JOBURG"Not Houses But Homes" We recognise residential projects that provide the best possible innovative, progressive and inclusive housing that addresses the needs of Inner City residents and supports community development. These nominees don’t simply build houses, but homes. Recognition will be given to new projects, regeneration projects, refurbishments, building improvements, innovative building management and maintenance programmes and initiatives, all of which speak to an enhanced quality of life for inner city residents. Previous winners in this category include:
WORKING & BUYING JOBURG"Creating A Business Destination" We give kudos to innovative, exciting and striking commercial and retail developments that attract both provider and consumer to the city business hub. CThe Adjudication Panel will consider retail and commercial (including mixed use) projects, irrespective of size or scale. We actively encourage nominations of SMMEs and individual investors, as well as big business. Here, concept is as critical as design. Form and functionality will be put under the spotlight with attention being given to utilising space to bring life, footfall and sustainability to business in the city. This category takes cognisance of the degree to which nominees "create a business destination".
Previous ‘Working & Buying Joburg’ winners include:
RELAXING & PLAYING JOBURG"The Recreation Destination"
Smart Gym: Relaxing and Playing Joburg winner 2009
Joburg, the ‘recreation destination’ is the focus of this category. Here, we focus on creative and innovative use of the built environment. Our adjudicators will be looking for bold use of new and/or existing buildings. This category is all about exciting use of space to create a truly-Joburg recreational experience.
We are searching for projects that have made novel use of their physical environment. From hotels and short-term accommodation to projects that have defined Joburg’s style of ‘wining and dining’ in a residential or office area considered to have been ‘dead’ space. Our quest is for spaces wherein the Jozi entertainment experience is enhanced.
Please note that project size does not preclude any private sector or civil society organisations from nomination. Smaller projects, courageous entrepreneurs and individual investors are encouraged to enter this category. Previous winners in this category are:
SUSTAINING JOBURG"Green Buildings, Green City" This category profiles pioneering projects and individuals that have applied innovative, environmentally sound approaches, implementation and maintenance to built environment investment, regeneration and development in the Inner City. In other words, as Joburg strives to transform its environment literally, our vision is for “green buildings” and a “green city.”
Nominations are anticipated to include projects that incorporate sustainable and innovative use of green materials anchored in the philosophy of ‘Reduce, Recycle and Reuse’, whether through design, development and/or maintenance. These nominees are contributing to an environmentally sustainable Joburg.
Previous winners in this category include:
CARING JOBURG"Supporting Joburg's Citizens" Our search for the caregivers, Joburg’s ‘caring heart’ is on. This category focuses on acknowledging selfless and community-minded individuals, volunteer groups and organisations. Nominees would be those who deliver support services that contribute to community development to all residents, with a specific focus on the more vulnerable members therein.
Previous winners in this category are:
BELIEVING IN JOBURG - THE STAN NKOSI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD"Joburg the home of Innovators, Investors and Implementers" Nothing describes the role of those who have consciously remained, sustained or reinvented the life of the inner city as well as those who have maintained belief in the heart of Jozi when nobody else did.
Previous winners in this category include:
CONSERVING JOBURG - THE COLOSSEUM AWARD"Joburg Past, Present and Future" The Inner City is home to many heritage buildings that tell the story of Joburg’s growth from mining camp to world-class city.
